Phish Raise the Curtain With “the Curtain With” at the Greek Theatre

Last night Phish performed their first of three evenings at the iconic Greek Theatre in Berkeley, Calif., as part of their ongoing West Coast spring tour. The show started early at 6:40 p.m. and saw a range of emotions, including an ever-heavy “Carini” that also included a Trey Anastasio mentioning Tim “Frenchie” Gazaille–the now iconic Naked Guy from their rain-delayed concert at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park–who had passed away from lung cancer the day before.

Phish opened the performance with the first “The Curtain With” since June 30, 2019, or 117 shows. Next came “Carini,” which pulled the crowd into the moment with its leaden opening chords present, courageous and free like the late Gazaille. Phish furthered the message without pause by flowing into “All of These Dreams,” singing, “All of these dreams would be yours to pursue/The rest of your lifetime, devoid of a care/ If you keep your eyes open, you may find yourself there.” They followed with “Stash” and “Halfway to the Moon” before a pairing of “Mull” > “Undermind” before closing the frame with “Theme From the Bottom.”

The second set was only comprised of four songs but held the same intensity and meaning as the set–which had twice its compositions–that proceeded it. The massive improvision-fueled segment began with “My Soul” – after the first set, Page McConnell was more ready set ivory aflame, and the rest of the band all collectively shined during the song. Next came “Tweezer,” another track where each member of Phish could explore their abilities and inclinations; they stretched the song well past 30 minutes utilizing the outdoor space as a sonic science lab, to say the least. They continued with one last jammed-out pairing of “Simple” > “Rock and Roll” to close the frame. Blissed-out fans roared after the set came to a close before Phish returned for an encore of “Miss You” and “Sand.”

Phish will continue their spring tour with another performance at The Greek Theatre tonight.
