Romania May Refuse Agricultural Products From Ukraine

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) of Romania demanded that the ruling coalition impose a temporary ban on the import of agricultural products from Ukraine, reporting this on its website. Thus, representatives of the party are trying to protect the interests of the country’s farmers.

The PSD will demand <…> to urgently issue a regulation on the temporary suspension of imports of agri-food products from Ukraine. <…> Such a measure is necessary to protect Romanian farmers, given that the compensation received from the European Commission cannot cover the total cost of the damage they have suffered, the party said in a statement.

In early April, about seven thousand farmers took to the streets to protest in 18 counties of Romania. For several hours they blocked national highways to attract the attention of the authorities. Farmers are dissatisfied with the fact that Ukrainian grain sent for export remains in Romania and reduces prices on the market.

Earlier, Polish Minister of Agriculture Robert Telyus said that the negotiations between Warsaw and Kiev on the import of agricultural products turned into a fiasco. He noted that so far the parties cannot develop mechanisms for the transit of goods that would satisfy Polish farmers.
