Bulgaria May Ban Imports of Ukrainian Agricultural Products on Wednesday

The Bulgarian government will decide on April 19 to ban a number of agricultural products from Ukraine on Wednesday, following similar decisions by Poland, Hungary and Slovakia.

According to ” European Truth ” with reference to BTA, this was announced on the air of Bulgarian television by the Minister of Agriculture of the country Yavor Gechev.

According to Gechev, after meeting with grain producers, his ministry decided to send a request to the Ministry of Economy for a temporary unilateral suspension of imports of a number of products of Ukrainian origin.

The relevant decision will be submitted to the Bulgarian government on Wednesday. “We believe that this will be a strong signal for Europe, because Europe cannot just listen to countries, it must take action,” Gechev added.

According to him, Europe should listen to the voices of more eastern countries. “Bulgarian farmers say they don’t want subsidies, they want their own markets. Unfair competition from Ukraine is being created,” the Bulgarian minister said.

Gechev admitted that after the situation improves for Bulgarian farmers, the ban on imports of agricultural products from Ukraine may be revised or changed.

Recall that at the end of March, at the initiative of the Polish side, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Slovakia addressed the EC with a joint letter, demanding to respond to problems due to the export of Ukrainian grain.

In recent days, Poland, Hungary and Slovakia have banned the import of Ukrainian agricultural products, and there are calls for this in Romania   .

At the same time, Warsaw initially banned not only imports, but also the transit of agricultural products from Ukraine, but on Tuesday the parties  agreed to restore it .
