The 64-year-old holidaymaker was dragged out of the water by fellow tourists in Alykanas on the holiday island of Zante as ambulance crews and the coastguard raced to the scene

A British man has died after being pulled unconscious from the sea in Greece in front of horrified holidaymakers.

The 64-year-old was dragged out of the water and onto the beach by fellow tourists in Alykanas on the holiday island of Zante.

The incident took place at around 9.15am on Friday (about 7.15am BST) according to local authorities, who say both the ambulance and coastguard crews raced to the scene in an attempt to save the man’s life.

He was taken to Zakynthos General Hospital, but was later pronounced dead.

Reports say there was no lifeguard on duty at the beach at the time of the incident on Friday morning.

A preliminary investigation into the man’s death is now being carried out by the Port Authority of Zakynthos.

Approximately 850,000 tourists visit Zante on average each year.
