Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Houston hosted the 57th Annual Greek Festival October 5-7 with great success.
In the courtyard of the church, there were stands offering various Greek foods, Greek beers, wines, sweets, and the best loukoumades, beloved by Greeks and non-Greeks alike, while the three-day event also featured Greek music. In the community hall, vendors were selling a variety of Greek products and works of art from Greece and the United States.
The community’s clergy offered educational lectures in the church about religion and the various sacraments, but also the vestments of the deacon, priests, and hierarchs. Every lecture was attended by non-Orthodox visitors interested in learning about Orthodox Christianity.
Finally, in the huge gym that can hold over 500 people, a crowd of people attended to watch the youth perform dances in traditional costumes from all over Greece.
The Greek festivals are held each year for the economic support of the communities that host them, but at the same time, they play an important role in helping foreigners learn what Greek and Orthodox mean.
